Put yourself in their shoes. In 1720 France was just coming out of a long war that had left the nation on the edge of bankruptcy. People were starving to death and plagues were sweeping the country. The rich were getting richer and the poor were getting poorer. Pierre & Marie Mayeux were newlyweds who left behind everything in order to build a new life in French Louisiana. Little did they know the difficult and terrifying path that lay before them. 1729 is their story, and the story of hundreds like them who came to a new world with new hope, only to have it dashed and broken time after time. This is the tale of their journey across the Atlantic, enduring a year in plague-ridden Biloxi, making their way 600 miles up the Mississippi River, surviving one of the worst massacres in American history, living in the newly founded swamp village of New Orleans, and finally raising a family in South Louisiana. Today there are a million living descendants of Pierre and Marie Mayeux. But there almost were none.

Making Sense of Vascular Ultrasound is designed to give users a hands-on, practical approach to the diagnosis of vascular disease. This pocket-sized handbook provides easy to read, concise, point-form text and includes high-resolution ultrasound images and informative line diagrams. Each regional chapter covers · anatomy · pathology · clinical presentations · differential diagnosis · treatment · what the doctor needs to know · normal findings and criteria for disease as seen by ultrasound · comprehensive protocols · ultrasound images to collect for reports The book also provides an overview of the physical principles of ultrasound, the physiology of blood flow, vascular pathology, setting up a vascular ultrasound diagnostic service, and interventional vascular ultrasound procedures.

This book provides the current state of knowledge of basic mechanisms of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). The main focus is on idiosyncratic drug reactions because they are the most difficult to deal with. It starts with a general description of the major targets for ADRs followed by a description of what are presently believed to be mediators and biochemical pathways involved in idiosyncratic drug reactions. There is also a description of several examples of ADRs that serve to illustrate specific aspects of ADR mechanisms. Eventually the book shows that ultimately better methods are needed to predict which drug candidates are likely to cause ADRs and which patients are at increased risk. But at present research seems to be far from this goal.

On November 23, 1887, white vigilantes gunned down unarmed black laborers and their families during a spree lasting more than two hours. The violence erupted due to strikes on Louisiana sugar cane plantations. Fear, rumor and white supremacist ideals clashed with an unprecedented labor action to create an epic tragedy. A future member of the U.S. House of Representatives was among the leaders of a mob that routed black men from houses and forced them to a stretch of railroad track, ordering them to run for their lives before gunning them down. According to a witness, the guns firing in the black neighborhoods sounded like a battle. Author and award-winning reporter John DeSantis uses correspondence, interviews and federal records to detail this harrowing true story.

Practical Vascular Ultrasound: An Illustrated Guide delivers a hands-on, practical approach to the diagnosis of vascular disease. Providing an overview of performing vascular ultrasounds, the physiology of blood flow, and vascular pathology, the book explores the various vascular conditions most investigated through ultrasound. Conditions covered range from extracranial cerebrovascular arterial diseases to chronic venous disease in the lower limbs. For each disorder, the authors discuss: Anatomy Pathology Clinical presentations Differential diagnosis What doctors need to know for each condition Normal findings and criteria for disease as seen by ultrasound Comprehensive protocols for scanning Ultrasound images and observations that should be collected for best practice reporting The authors also discuss interventional vascular ultrasound procedures. Using easy-to-read, point-form text, this concise text is enhanced with high-resolution ultrasound images and clear line diagrams. It provides a consistent, comprehensive, and professional approach to vascular ultrasound.
